Hueytown Middle School JUNA Team Represents at the Junior United Nations Assembly

This is the image for the news article titled Hueytown Middle School JUNA Team Represents at the Junior United Nations AssemblyThe Hueytown Middle School JUNA Team represented the nations of Colombia and Haiti last Thursday and Friday at the Junior United Nations Assembly at Birmingham Southern College. They competed against 23 schools who represented 43 other countries.
 
Colombia’s resolution requested assistance from the UN to offer the children of their county the opportunity to be successful by providing educational resources for them.

Haiti’s resolution asked to create a team of rapid-response workers to respond and aid in the event of natural disasters.
 
Both Colombia and Haiti’s resolutions were presented and then questioned by the fellow nations. After defending their resolutions both were found favorable at the committee level and then passed at the General Assembly level.
 
Colombia won a $50 grant for UNICEF, as well as honorable mention for Best Native Dress and were the OVERALL winners in the display board category.
 
Haiti won honorable mention for the Judge’s Spirit Award.
 
8th graders, Hannah Myrick and Elise Kidd, were finalists to receive the Erin McPherson Leadership Award.
 
Hueytown Middle School is the only school in Jefferson County that has a JUNA Team. Their school is very proud of their students and the hard work they did to prepare for this event in order to represent HMS and JEFCOED!
