ZETA PHI BETA SORORITY - $1,000 scholarship based on 50 documented

Horatio Alger Association – The national scholarship is based upon critical financial need ($55,000 or less adjusted gross income per family is preferred), involvement in co-curricular and community activities; demonstrated integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity; a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0.  Apply online at . Horatio Alger Association Career Tech Scholarships-- Apply online .  Some of the career/technical scholarships to community colleges have later deadlines, but apply as early as possible.  Deadline is June 15, 2018.

 VFW Voice of America Scholarship - Students should first draft an essay based on the 2017-2018 Theme:  American History: Our Hope for the Future”  Students should then record their reading of the draft to a CD. The recording should be no shorter than 3 minutes and no longer than 5 minutes (plus or minus 5 seconds).  It must be accompanied by a typewritten script.  Since entries must be received by the department by October 31, please turn in all tapes and transcripts to Ms.Hale by October 24.  See Ms. Hale for info or go to .  If you have a connection to a local post, you may turn it in yourself.

Brown Scholar Program – This program seeks to identify African-American high school seniors who will make significant contributions to society. Applicants must excel academically, exhibit exceptional leadership potential, participate in community service activities and demonstrate financial need.  Go to  for details.  Deadline:  November 1 for all the scholarships the organization is involved with and January 9 for the Ron Brown only.

Tommy Smith Scholarship - Accepted into college.  Write a 500 word essay answering "If you could start any business while in college or afterward what would it be and why"?   Deadline May 31, 2019

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Scholarship - undergraduate scholarship program available to high achieving high school seniors with financial need and plan to go to 4 year university.    Deadline November 20, 2018

ACT COLLEGE 7 CAREER READINESS CHAMPIONS - High School Students who have overcome challenges and can articulate their education and / or career actions.  Minimum ACT score 22 OR  Gold WorkKeys National Career Readiness Certificate.  Student can be enrolled in 2 year or 4 year college to apply.  DEADLINE OCTOBER 31 2018

 Barr Scholarship in Undergraduate Physics - $1,200 per year for students majoring in PHYSICS ONLY.  DEADLINE - FEBRUARY 23

AXA Achievement Scholarship – The AXA Achievementsm Scholarship offers college scholarships of $10,000 and $25,000 to high school seniors who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in their activities in school, the community or the workplace. The scholarships are sponsored by the AXA Foundation, in association with U.S. News & World Report and are based upon ambition and drive, determination to set and reach goals, respect for self. One winner per state.  Apply online at  2018 program will be accepting applications until November 6.  Your application MUST be one of the first 10,000 submitted electronically by the deadline date. BLSA Thomas E. Huey Scholarship – Based on financial need (50%), GPA (40%), accomplishments (10%), recommendation from business education teacher.  Applications are available in guidance.  Deadline:  Must be postmarked by December 31, 2018.

The J. Craig and Page T. Smith “First in Family” Scholarship – Based upon achievement, community service, and need.  Extra consideration is given for students who are the first in their families to attend college.  Go to   Deadline:    January 5, 2018.  The application process is time-consuming.  Start the process AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

The Alabama School Public Relations Association Scholarship- Based on students who plan to enroll in an Alabama College or university who plan to seek a degree in communication, public relations or a related field. Deadline for the ALSPRA Student scholarship is February 2.

Fresh n' Lean- Based upon healthy eating habits. Scholarship offers $1,500 to high school seniors. Required that students submit a short video or photo essay that shows how their personal eating habits have helped them achieve specific goals. for more information visit Deadline: May 1st 2018

A.L Bratcher Scholarship- $2,500 scholarship awarded to two high school seniors. Scholarship application available at Application due no later than March 9, 2018 

Beta Chi Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa's Odelle Holt Educational Scholarship- $500.00 scholarship awarded to high school seniors who have chosen education as a career. Deadline for application is for it to be postmarked by March 16, 2018

MJHS Alumni, Peter Tom Willis, Sid Reno - Applications available in guidance after February 1.  A copy of the front page of the IRS 1040 form is required for proof of income for Alumni, Peter Tom, and Sid Reno.  One copy will suffice for all three scholarships.  This copy seen by only one person and is shredded as soon as application information is verified.  Applications are assigned a number and given to the Alumni Association with all names removed.  Deadline:  April 5

Andrew Shugart Charitable Trust Foundation Scholarship - Based upon work experience, scholarship, character.  See Guidance.  Applications available February 1.  Deadline: April 5

Dr. William E. & Cherrell Creel Burkett Scholarship - Dr. William E. and Cherrell Creel Burkett are Mortimer Jordan graduates who taught at mortimer Jordan.  Dr. Burkett was principal at MJHS from 1965 - 1968.  They have 5 children and 3 grandchildren who graduated from Mortimer Jordan.  This scholarship is given in honor of Dr. and Mrs. Burkett by their children. A scholarship of $1,500.00 will be awarded to a senior.  The award will be paid to the college or university of his/her choice.  The award will be announced at the school's awards day and/or at graduation.  Deadline:  April 5

Mercedes-Benz U.S. International Scholarship Program - Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of academic record, demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities, honors, work experience, statement of goals and aspirations, unusual personal or family circumstances, and an outside appraisal. The Alabama Home Builders Foundation – Awards scholarships to students planning to pursue a degree in the core trades of the building industry.  These include, but are not limited to, carpentry and cabinetry, masonry, HVAC/HVACR, plumbing, drafting, electrical engineering, and electrical work.  These can be used for trade schools, community colleges, and 4-year colleges.  Deadline:  March 15

Coosa Pines Federal Credit Union Scholarship - Coosa Pines Federal Credit Union will be awarding five $1,000 scholarships to graduating high school members planning to pursue post-secondary education in the fall of 2017.  The scholarships will be awarded to students who exemplify credit union values of personal and civic responsibility through their grades, extracurricular activities, essay responses, letter(s) of recommendation, and/or community service.  CPFCU members graduating high school in 2016 are encouraged to apply.* Application deadline is Friday, April 6, 2017.

American Association of Blacks in Energy – Must major in engineering, environmental studies, mathematics, business, or the physical sciences, and be a member of a minority group which is underrepresented in these fields.  Applications available in guidance.  Deadline:  march 15

Charles Poland Education Scholarship - $1,000 to student whose parent or guardian is an active pupil transportation employee for the past three years.  Eligible students must have 3.0 GPA are are selected based on their leadership, citizenship, and service.  See Guidance Office For an application.  deadline April 20

Orlando Scholarship Organization - Partners with the Miss High School America Organization to award one boy and one girl a "Community Service and Arts $2500 Scholarship". Go to for information. Deadline ​May 15

North Jefferson County Republican Club 2018 Scholarship- this scholarship is designed to provide financial need for college expenses to seniors who plan to be or are involved with the republican party. please see guidance for application. deadline March 31

Carlton Reese Memorial Unity Choir (CRMUC Inc.)- scholarship program for students in musical performance, music education, or composition. see guidance for application. deadline April 27



The dates listed below are last year’s dates.  As information is sent to guidance, these will be updated and moved to current listings.  Often, on-line scholarship organizations update their websites a week or two before they mail information to the guidance office.  If a scholarship is of particular interest, students may want to check the website now. 


Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Scholarships(ALAFCS) -  Scholarships are posted on the ALAFCS Web site,  Go to for applications.  Students must be majoring in FACS in college.  There are scholarships for 4-year schools and scholarships for students who are working toward a 2-year degree in a FACS area (Examples:  Culinary Arts, Interior Design, Child Development).  DeadlineDecember 1 


Mensa Scholarship The Foundation's college scholarship program bases its awards totally on essays written by the applicants. Consideration is NOT given to grades, academic program or financial need.  It is NOT necessary that the applicant be a member of Mensa. The eligibility requirements are that the applicant be enrolled, for the academic year following the award, in a degree program in an accredited U.S. institution of post-secondary education.  Go to  Deadline:  Applications are available from 09/15/2016 to 01/15/2017.


Burger King Scholars - James W. McLamore WHOPPER™ Scholarship: Consideration will be given to each applicant's academic record, participation in school and community activities,and and work experience.  Financial need will be considered.  (Other different BK scholarships are available for Burger King employees and children of employees.)  Apply online at  Deadline: Application data must be submitted electronically.  The application opens on Oct. 15, 2016 and closes on December 15, 2015.  If 50,000 applications are received prior to December 15, the application will no longer be available.  Enter early!



Linly-Heflin - Scholarship is for women attending a four-year, SACS-accredited Alabama college.  Minimum ACT is 23, and applicant must have good grades and financial need.  Heavy emphasis is placed on the interview.  Applications may be downloaded at  Must be postmarked by January 9


Washington Crossing Foundation Scholarship – For students who plan to pursue a career in public service.  Go to for details.  Applications must be POSTMARKED by January 15, 2017.


McKelvey Foundation Scholarship – For students who operate their own for-profit businesses while still in high school. Must have at least one employee, even if part time.  Go to  January 25


Buick Achievers Scholarship Program – Must be planning to major in engineering, technical or business field AND planning to use this degree to pursue a career related to the automotive industry.  To see a list of acceptable majors and to apply, go to  They are looking for students with good grades who are also dedicated students, leaders in school, volunteer workers,  college-bound and community-minded individuals.  They offer up to $25,000 per year for 100 first-time freshman or existing college students, and $2,000 one-time awards for an additional 1,000 students.  Deadline:  February 1

Executive Women International Scholarship Program – This scholarship is based on academic performance and financial criteria.  Student must plan to pursue a degree at an accredited post-secondary institution, have a demonstrated financial need, have a minimum 3.00 GPA on a 4.0 scale, and have contributed to their community as demonstrated by their involvement in extra-curricular activities, work, religious, or volunteer activities.  Mortimer Jordan may nominate only one student.  The packet must be returned to Ms. Henry by Wednesday, February 22, 2017 to allow time for a committee to select the MJ nominee.  Applications are available in guidance.


Mildred, Mack, and Blanche Stewart Teacher Education Scholarship: For students who plan to major in teaching at UAB.   Pick up an application from guidance or go to and find the school of education.  Under prospective students, go to scholarships for information.  February 16


Regions Riding Forward Essay Contest - Your essay should, in 500 words or less:  (a) address how an African-American has been an inspiration in your life, and (b) discuss the contributions of the African-American individual who has served to inspire and motivate you.  Go to to apply for this $5000 scholarship.  Deadline:  February 28

College Counts Scholarship - “This scholarship program will help qualified Alabamians who may find it difficult to get other types of scholarship assistance,” said State Treasurer Young Boozer. “Not every student makes a 30 or higher on their ACT, or has parents who can afford to write a check for tuition. But there are thousands of bright young minds in our state who work hard and deserve help achieving their dream of a college degree.”  The program is designed to offer financial assistance to Alabama students who plan to enroll in colleges and universities. It will provide one-time awards of $4,000 to qualified recipients enrolling in four-year schools and $2,000 to those enrolling in two-year schools. Eligible students may apply online beginning January 2 at .Applicants must  be high school seniors or first-time college freshman,  U.S. citizens,  Alabama residents,  and planning to enroll in an Alabama eligible educational institution.  Applicants also must demonstrate financial need, have a minimum GPA of 2.75, and have an ACT score of 26 or below.  The online application opens at 12:01 AM CST on December 1, 2016 and will close at 11:59 PM CST on March 1, 2017.


NUCOR Foundation Scholarship:  $3200 per year, renewable.  Applicants must be majoring in engineering or metallurgy.

Alabama Association of School Office Personnel – Must be enrolling in an Alabama college or university and majoring in business or K-12 education.  Scholarships are based upon scholastic record and financial need.  Go to to download application.  All materials must be RECEIVED by March 1.


SAE Engineering Scholarships – Scholarships are funded by various corporate sponsors. Student must plan to attend an accredited engineering schoolRequirements vary for particular scholarships.  Go to   Deadline: March 15. 


American Society of Civil Engineers - Must attend an accredited Alabama civil engineering program.  On-line applications are available at  Deadline: March 31


American Legion Oratorical Contest – Go to for preliminary information. Students first must prepare an 8 to 10 minute oration on some phase of the Constitution of the United States.  After delivering this speech, students must be prepared to make a 3-minute extemporaneous speech on one of four different assigned topics.  This year’s assigned topics are Amendment 7; Amendment 10; Amendment 16, and Amendment 17.  The area contest will be held in February.  Students should begin working on it NOW.  See Ms. Henry immediately if interested.


ēCO Credit Union - $2500 scholarship based upon academics, extracurricular activities, and community service.  Must be a member of ēCO Credit Union or become a member.  Applications are available in guidance.  Deadline:  March 3


Bernie Varnadore Scholarship – Sponsored by Dixie Baseball – For deserving youth that have previously participated in Dixie Boys/Majors Baseball program.  Scholarship is based upon academics, essay, and income.  The committee will not look at athletic ability.  Applications available in guidance.  Deadline:  April 1

Magnolia Festival Scholarship – Sponsored by Gardendale Chamber of Commerce. Alabama Center for Architecture Scholarship – For high school seniors entering freshman year of an accredited architecture program.  Awards are based upon academic performance, graphic ability, financial need, and overall interest in the profession of architecture.    Go to  Deadline:  April 6
